Tim Jenkin

Community currency expert and software developer

In 1970s Tim Jenkin was an activist supporting Nelson Mandela's African National Congress (ANC) in South Africa. He was jailed for his anti-apartheid activities. He managed to escape from prison in 1979 and went into exile in the UK, it is considered one of the most daring escapes in South Africa's history.

During the 1980s he set up and coordinated a state-of-the-art encrypted communications network to allow Nelson Mandela to communicate with the ANC from prison.

He decided not to move into formal politics after the end of apartheid and instead set up and manages the Community Exchange System (CES), a global network of community trading exchanges.
